Braces FAQ in Miami & Doral, FL

If you are beginning a braces treatment, you probably have some questions about your treatment and how it’s going to affect your lifestyle. These FAQs can help you find the answers to common concerns and questions, helping you adjust to braces. The Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics offer braces and other effective orthodontic solutions to residents of Miami Springs, Kendall, Hialeah, and the neighboring areas of Florida.

What Can Braces Fix?

Braces are an effective and versatile solution that can help patients achieve healthy and functional smiles. The main function of braces is to correct the position and alignment of the teeth, creating teeth that are appropriately spaced and aesthetically pleasing. Braces are also used to fix malocclusions, or improper bites. This can include overbites, underbites, or any other scenario where your teeth don’t line up properly while biting.

Do Braces Hurt?

Braces are not a painful treatment, but they can cause slight soreness and discomfort throughout the treatment experience. If you have just gotten your braces on, you might experience some discomfort from the brackets or wires poking the inside of your mouth. This begins to fade as your mouth gets used to having braces, and can be managed with pain relievers or wax, which we provide to each patient. Additionally, you may experience some soreness after getting your braces put on or tightened. This is caused by teeth shifting in your mouth. It can make eating difficult for a few days, but the soreness typically fades quickly.

How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?

Your braces treatment will depend on the concerns that need to be corrected during your treatment. Typically, our patients wear braces for between six and 30 months, with most patients wearing them for about 22 months. During your initial appointment, we will be able to provide you with an accurate timeline of your braces treatment.

What Foods Can I Eat with Braces?

Generally, you will have to avoid crunchy, sticky, or hard foods that can damage your braces appliance. Because your teeth may be sore after your appointment, you may want to stick to a soft diet so that you can eat with minimal discomfort. How Do I Keep My Braces Clean?

Brushing and flossing are hugely important during your braces treatment. Braces easily catch food that is difficult to remove without thorough oral hygiene habits. To learn more, visit our page on oral hygiene. In addition to maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits, it’s important that you continue to receive regular check ups and cleanings with your dentist. Your dentist can also help you maintain good oral hygiene.

Should I Visit My Regular Dentist While I Have Braces?

Although we go to great lengths to help our patients maintain oral health during their orthodontic care, it is important to continue seeing a dentist on a regular basis during your orthodontic treatment. Patients are encouraged to continue visiting their regular dentists every six months for routine cleanings and checkups.
