What Are Emergency Orthodontics?

If you experience an injury, damage to your braces, or any other orthodontic emergencies, you may need emergency orthodontic care. In these situations, we do our best to get you in for an appointment as soon as possible. We keep our schedule flexible to ensure that our patients can be seen in a timely manner. In some cases, you may be able to address your emergency before coming in for your appointment. If you are experiencing soreness, loose appliances, or poking wires, please explore the sections below to effectively manage these issues until your appointment.

How Can I Reduce Soreness?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLSoreness is a common issue that patients experience as a result of their braces treatment. You may find that your teeth are tender and it is difficult to bite or chew your food. We recommend that patients stick to a soft diet until this soreness goes away. Rinsing your mouth with a warm salt-water solution can also help to alleviate soreness. This can be easily made by dissolving a teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of warm water. If soreness persists, you can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or similar pain relievers. However, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen Sodium are advised against because they will slow tooth movement and may interfere with your treatment.

How Can I Reduce Discomfort from My Headgear?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLDiscomfort can be caused by improper wear. If you are experiencing discomfort, refer to the instructions provided. Many patients find that their headgear discomfort decreases the more that it is worn, so it may be best to continue the prescribed usage. If the metal piece is bent or your appliance is otherwise damaged, contact us to make an appointment so we can address it.

How Can I Fix a Loose Appliance?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLIf your appliance is loose and causing poking or discomfort, you can use wax to address it. If the problem persists or wax isn’t working, contact us for an appointment.

How Can I Fix a Loose Bracket?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLIf your bracket is loose, but still attached to the wire, it is best to leave it in place until your next appointment. This may be uncomfortable, so we encourage patients to use wax to minimize any discomfort. If the bracket has fallen off or can be easily removed, place it somewhere safe, like in an envelope. Then, bring it with you to your next appointment so we can properly repair it.

How Can I Fix a Loose Wire?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLIf your wire is loose, you may be able to use a pair of tweezers or needle-nosed pliers to put it back into place. If it cannot be put back into place, we recommend that patients cover the end of the wire in wax to prevent any discomfort. If this doesn’t work, you can clip the end of the wire off by using a pair of fingernail clippers and reapplying wax as needed.

How Can I Fix a Poking Wire?

Emergency Information in Miami & Doral, FLIf you are experiencing discomfort due to wires or brackets pressing against the cheeks or gums, you can apply wax to reduce the discomfort. This will help the mouth adjust to the appliance. If you have a wire that is poking out, you can use a pencil eraser to push it out of the way. Wax can also be helpful in this situation, providing relief until we correct the issue at your next appointment.
