After a braces treatment, we encourage patients to use a retainer and maintain good oral hygiene habits in order to preserve their results. The Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics offer braces and other orthodontic solutions to men and women living in Miami Springs, Kendall, Hialeah, and the neighboring communities of Florida.
What is Orthodontic Retention?
Orthodontic retention is the period following your braces treatment. During this time, we focus our attention on maintaining the results achieved from your braces treatment. All too often, patients finish their braces treatment and allow their teeth to shift, making years of treatment pointless. The face continues to age after braces are removed, which can trigger additional changes in the jaw over time. However, with the right appliances, patients can easily preserve the alignment of their teeth and enjoy a straight smile for years to come.
What is Used to Ensure Orthodontic Retention?
The best way to ensure orthodontic retention is with the use of a retainer. A retainer is a device that continues to place a gentle pressure on the teeth to hold them in place. These can be either removable or fixed, allowing patients to choose the retainer that will best fit their lifestyle. To learn more, visit our page on retainers.
How Long Will I Have to Wear a Retainer After Braces?
Like the braces treatment, the duration of your retainer use will depend on your teeth. Fixed retainers are cemented into place, so they can be worn for several years without being removed. These are unobtrusive and will not interfere with your smile. Removable retainers are also an option, which are typically worn for 18 to 30 months after treatment. During this time, the retainer use is progressively reduced to minimize tooth movement. If you notice any movement during this time, let us know immediately so we can address it.
Retainers and other techniques are used to improve orthodontic retention and maintain the beautiful results you’ve received from your braces treatment.
