Types of Retainers in Miami & Doral, FL

The retainer is essential to maintaining your results after your braces treatment. At the Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics, we offer a range of retainers to help our patients achieve the best results possible. We are proud to serve the residents of Miami Springs, Kendall, Hialeah, and the nearby areas of Florida.

What is an Essix Retainer?

An Essix retainer is the most common type of retainer we use at the Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics. These retainers are clear and fit discreetly over the teeth. These retainers are custom-made to fit snugly on the teeth, ensuring that they don’t shift after your braces treatment. This is integral during the retention phase, during which the goal is to maintain the position of the teeth.

What is a Hawley Retainer?

On some occasions, we may recommend a Hawley retainer. This retainer is composed of a metal wire that surrounds the front teeth, holding them in place. The wire is fixed to a piece of acrylic that sits comfortably on the roof of your mouth. Just like the Essix retainer, the Hawley retainer is removable. We encourage patients to remove their retainers during meals and clean them at least once a day.

What is a Permanent Retainer?

A permanent retainer, also called a lingual retainer or a fixed retainer, is cemented to the inside of the teeth. This can be a convenient solution, as it is a small appliance and patients don’t have to worry about removing it for cleaning. However, we advise patients to pay special attention to the areas where the retainer is fixed while brushing and flossing to maintain good oral health.
