Orthodontics in Miami & Doral, FL

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on the treatment and prevention of dental abnormalities. Most often, orthodontic treatments are used to correct the alignment of the teeth and jaws, creating a more even bite and a straighter smile.

What is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a type of specialized dentist who has received additional years of training and experience. Orthodontists specialize in treatments that improve the smile by straightening the teeth and correcting jaw alignment.

Do I Need a Referral to See an Orthodontist?

Many patients begin their orthodontic treatment after receiving a referral from their regular dentist. However, if you are noticing problems with the development or alignment of your teeth, you can schedule an appointment without a referral. We are always happy to help patients address their smile concerns.

What is the Best Age to Begin Orthodontic Treatment?

If you are looking for a way to improve the appearance or function of your smile, then any age is a good age to begin orthodontic treatment. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children visit an orthodontist by the age of seven. This allows us to diagnose and address any developing issues before they require more extensive treatment. Regardless of your age, the Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics specialize in a range of treatment options that will help you achieve a perfect smile.

What Are Braces?

Braces are the most common treatment for correcting the alignment and position of the teeth. They are a great treatment option even if you have crowns or missing teeth. There are different types of braces available, allowing each patient to choose the treatment that best fits their lifestyle and treatment goals. These include:

Do Braces Hurt?

Braces are not a painful treatment. In fact, our professional team of orthodontists work very hard to ensure that patients remain entirely comfortable during their appointments. We have significant experience in providing braces treatments to patients of all ages and are familiar with the techniques necessary to provide a smooth treatment experience. However, many patients will experience some amount of soreness or discomfort in the days that follow their appointment as the teeth begin to adjust to the braces. This often fades within a few days.

How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?

Each patient begins their braces treatment at a different point depending on the current position of their teeth. This means that the duration of your braces treatment will vary depending on how your teeth are positioned at the beginning of treatment. Our patients wear braces anywhere between six and 30 months. However, the majority of braces treatments are completed after about 22 months.

How Do I Care for My Teeth While Wearing Braces or Other Appliances?

Brushing and flossing are hugely important during your braces treatment. Braces easily catch food that is difficult to remove without thorough oral hygiene habits. To learn more, visit our page on oral hygiene. In addition to maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits, it’s important that you continue to receive regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist. Your dentist can also help you maintain good oral hygiene. Finally, you should avoid foods that will damage your braces during your treatment. To learn more about these foods, visit our page on foods to avoid.

Will Braces Interfere with My Normal Activities and Hobbies?

Many patients find that braces take some getting used to. We recommend that patients use a mouthguard when playing sports or doing other physical activities in order to protect the teeth and the braces from damage. However, braces should not interfere with your ability to perform any of your usual school activities or hobbies.
