Parts of Braces

We encourage patients to become familiar with the parts of braces upon beginning their braces treatment. This helps us better communicate with you, facilitating a smoother treatment experience. The Doral & Miami Centers for Orthodontics offer braces and other orthodontic services to residents of Miami Springs, Kendall, Hialeah, and the neighboring communities of Florida.

What Are Bands?

Bands are the “anchors” of your braces. These metal bands are placed around the molars, which are the teeth in the back of the mouth. Bands are custom-fitted and cemented to the teeth to ensure a secure foundation for your braces.

What Are Brackets?

Brackets are the small, square pieces of metal that are cemented onto the teeth. These are often made of either metal or ceramics. The purpose of brackets is to connect all of the teeth to the archwire, which is the backbone of the braces treatment. Some brackets also have hooks on them to attach elastic rubber bands and further align the teeth.

What is an Archwire?

The archwire is the long wire that runs across the teeth. It is fastened to the bands on either side of the mouth and fed through the brackets on each tooth. This is the piece that is responsible for moving the teeth. As such, it is often replaced throughout your braces treatment.

What Are Ligatures?

Ligatures are small pieces of wire responsible for fastening the archwire to the brackets. These come in a range of colors, allowing patients to customize the appearance of their braces.

What Are Elastics?

Elastics, also called rubber bands, are a common component of the braces treatment. These are small rubber bands that connect a tooth on the upper jaw to a tooth on the lower jaw. This pulls the teeth closer together to correct the alignment of your bite. Elastics are removable, which means that patients are responsible for removing and reapplying them around meals.

What is a Coil Spring?

A coil spring is a small spring that is placed between two teeth that are located too close together. It exerts a gentle pressure on the teeth to push them farther apart and improve alignment. This may be removed, added, or adjusted at each appointment.

What is a Power Chain?

A power chain is made up of wire rings that are linked together across two or more teeth. This is used to correct teeth that are too far apart and to prevent spaces from opening between teeth. Like coil springs, these may be removed, added, or adjusted at each appointment.
